Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are oral prosthetics used to replace some or all of your permanent teeth. They’re made from materials like acrylic, nylon, or plastic and rest comfortably on top of your gums.

Custom crafted dentures can restore your smile to its near-original condition. They can also preserve your oral health and assist with daily activities like speaking and chewing.

What are the types of dentures?

At Alexandria Dental Clinic, the team offers several types of dentures, including:

Partial dentures

If you’re missing only a few teeth, the team might recommend partial dentures. Partial dentures have a metal framework that connects to artificial teeth. The framework snaps into place around your existing permanent teeth, providing a sturdy foundation. Partial dentures are easy to clean and can be removed at any time.

Complete dentures

If you’re missing all of the teeth in your upper or lower jaw, consider complete dentures. Complete dentures have a pink acrylic base and gums, and a full row of artificial teeth. Upper dentures stay in by suction to the roof of your mouth while lower dentures have only gravity holding them in place. You may want to put denture glue or adhesive on the base plate to set the lower dentures on top of your gums.

Complete dentures look and function like your natural teeth. To keep them in optimal condition, it’s important to brush them daily and soak them overnight.

Implant-supported dentures

Implant-supported dentures attach to dental implants — small posts made from titanium that the team places into your jaw. If you have lower dentures that don’t fit correctly, the team might recommend implants for your lower jaw. Of all the types of artificial teeth, implant-supported dentures are the sturdiest and longest-lasting.

What does getting dentures involve?

Getting dentures typically takes four appointments spaced a week or two apart.

At your initial consultation, the team conducts an oral exam, reviews your dental health history, and asks about your goals for treatment. They then take digital impressions of your mouth. The team sends your impressions to a dental laboratory that manufactures your custom dentures. The second and third appointments are to try in and adjust the fit in a wax mockup before making them into hard durable acrylic.

About a week later you return to Alexandria Dental Clinic. The team has you try on your dentures and makes final adjustments as necessary. At the end of your appointment, you return home with a fully restored smile.

If you opt to receive implant-supported dentures, oral surgeons on the team use either a local or general anesthetic (your preference) and places 2-4 Implants into your jaw. Several months later, after the implants are locked and healed into your jaw,  you return to Alexandria Dental Clinic to complete the fabrication of your dentures.

How do I take care of my dentures?

Treat your dentures like you would your natural teeth. Brush twice a day and visit Alexandria Dental Clinic every six months for an oral exam and professional cleaning. If you wear partial or complete dentures, take them out before going to bed and soak them in a cleaning solution overnight.
